I grew up in Detroit, which means I’d see commercials for Monster Truck Rallys and they would scream “Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!” I don’t know why that’s stuck with me over the years but I think it’s cute and odd.
I love Substack. It’s a blend of my Tumblr days, my Xanga days, and a diary. I follow a few SS’s from folks I dig and adore—Saeed, Jenna, Fran, Darian—just to name a few.
I’m pulling away from social media a little bit (lol no worries I am still VERY online) but sometimes I use it to aid in my procrastination when I need to be focusing on things that are pretty important to me, like editing my book proposal, finding and applying to writers residencies, my IRL social life, da da da.
So to fill the gap of sharing things that only me and like 2 other people on my tl care about, I’m gonna do it here.
This is literally just a list of the stuff I’ve read, watched, listened to, and more that I—I don’t know—wanted to let the world know about? Only like, 8 people even know about this substack so it’s kinda odd that I’m writing as though it’s a big audience.
‘kthxbi!
What I Watched
The Righteous Gemstones is fucking FUNNY. Danny McBride hasn’t ever let me down comedically or outside of his art. Red in Pineapple Express is one of my favorite characters of all time and Jesse Gemstone is becoming another fav.
The Gilded Age is something I am oddly (well not really - knowing a copious amount of information about time periods aligns very well with who I am) well-versed on. After each episode, I spend like an hour on my phone fact-checking both myself and the episode…..I AM CORRECT 86% OF THE TIME. Would love for rape/molestation to stop being used to move plots forward.
Somebody Somewhere is such a visually stunning and well-written show. Bridget Everett deserves this series and I hope it gets a season 2, she’s been killing it in the game for a while now and she is really showing off in this series. AND she gets to use her love of cabaret in it too! AND it’s a little (lotta) gay!
That Night has every fucking body in it — I loved seeing “Introducing Eliza Dushku” in the credits.
Okay — I am usually not one for like, toilet humour (the only time I say the word fart without cringing is when I sing the theme song to Salute Your Shorts and even then….) but Sarah Sherman is fucking FUNNY AS SHIT AND REALLY GROSS AND I LOVE IT! I don’t dig comparison shit a lot but she’s giving vintage SNL for sure (hiya Gilda). I don’t fucking know what else is going on over there in Lorneville, USA but her bits alone are worth the watch and she’s really cute and I like her outfits — love when white pplz stick to mullets and leave baby hairs alone.
Marry Me was SO CUTE AND I LOVE A ROMCOM AND GOD I’M A SUCKER FOR THEM! It was also a dash gay and ugh, it made me so happy. I watched it when my week was turning around and I just loved it!!
Spencer / The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story / 4400 / Titane / Abbott Elementary
What I Re-Watched
Fortune Feimster’s comedy special “Sweet & Salty”
Parks and Recreation - I’m on season 5 and ugh why did Chris Pratt have to turn into a fucking hamster? “Animal Control” remains the best episode of the show by far, followed by all the “Ron and Tammy” episodes.
Some Superstore episodes
Some Younger episodes
Some SATC episodes
Chewing Gum
What I Listened To
This week’s episode of For Colored Nerds killed me in a great way ‘cos I was excited that these two were covering it. It was about a topic that has a wild chokehold on Black Twitter and Beyond…..cishet Black people and their inability to stop making everything about gender and gender roles.
The Gilded Age Podcast (SHUT UP) I like it because it talks a lot about the filming locations on the show, and I think it’s very cool how the show managed to film at some of the IRL 1880’s spots…..BUTTTTTTT I get frustrated with one of the hosts ‘cos she casually mentions how she doesn’t know a lot about things in this time period (her expertise is in the golden age) and that she will be learning a lot on the air from her co-host. That lowkey pisses me off because like — how did you get this job? But also, this week’s episode talked about the Blackness on the show with the Black folks that are part of it, and YAY I loved that…Do you think Mr. Levinson should take some tips from Mr. Fellows?
I’ve been messing around with my positive vibes playlist, there is one song that is always on it even though it’s really corny and tends to make me cry, it makes me happier at the end!
What I Read
This guy didn’t like that his wife essentially rejected high productivity in quarantine.
I despise Jeremy O. Harris and Sam Levinson and Drew made me scream with the perfect shots at them at the top of this article.
This tweet scared me and then I read about the murder of Christina Yuna Lee and I spiraled in my apartment one night until 3 am looking up newer home security systems. I was really scared to leave the house at all and I hate that because I don’t enjoy moving through the world in fear, but it was hard to shake for a few days. So I doubled down on staying in and watched funny things (and prayed a bit) until the feelings went away.
Down With Love is a fav rom-com and I am really loving the pieces that come ut of Bright Wall/Dark Room (ugh remember this beautiful piece in relation to The Royal Tennenbaums) really trying to put something together to write a long-form piece for them.
Zoë Kravitz talked about High Fidelity not being picked up for a second season over at Hulu. WE ALL KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THIS FUCKING SHOW ENDING.
It’s a dream of mine to open up an adorable little roadside hotel (and honestly a Mrs. Maisel sized resort) but until I hit on a scratch-off I will live thru Trixie doing it.
I don’t work out at gyms, well, unless running the slowest pace on the treadmill just to get the TV to start counts but this gym in Chicago (Trans & Asian Owned!!!) is V V V Dope!
This tweet, which made it’s rounds on writer Twitter, is a pull from The New Yorker Interview the infamous Candace Bushnell did.
She talks about how in the 90s she got paid TWO DOLLARS A FUCKING WORD (I FUCKING WISSSSHHHHH) for 3000-word pieces, her Vogue column gave her 5K a month, and how at 34 she got her fuckin’ Observer Column, and that’s when she knew she finally made it. I mean, the interview is interesting, don’t get me wrong, but also it’s just like “hmmmmm” - ya know? but this thread in response to it from Tirhakah kinda chats about how I feel
What I Ate
Honestly — mostly tacos, coffee, and discounted candy :/ at the start of the week
Chicken Philly cheesesteaks (or is it a Philly cheesechicken….or a chicken Philly cheese…..Help…)
Cheese eggs with a side of tater tots
a weird late-night concoction that I won’t get into.
pizza!
How I Felt
This week as told through Insecure gifs.
Etc.
I’ve been thinking a lot about those Booking.com commercials with Idris Elba & that Apple commercial with the baby squealing and running around.
I’m really excited about this Friday!
One of my friends is having a baby and I’m really happy for them.
I think I could live off BLT’s and Potstickers from Duck Duck Goat but I shouldn’t test that theory.
I want lotsa things from this shop and need to brush up on my french.
Ok until next week or like in 4 weeks if I don’t keep up with this, but I think I will cos it felt really good to have this tab open thru the week and dropping things in it to share <3
