I’ve been thinking a lot about pilots/first episodes, mainly because of the massive success of Abbott Elementary and then that led me to thinking about what were some of the best pilots/first episodes of the past maybe 15 or so years. There are a few lists that talk about this but I agree with NONE of them! So these are a few of my favorite pilots and I don’t super care if you agree ‘cos this is my substack and not yours!

• Mad Men — that was thee perfect pilot episode ending and you know it.

• Schitt’s Creek — Incredible charecter and plot set-up.

• Superstore - the setup coming full circle in the finale? Ugh!

• Wandavision - i can’t even get into it.

• Atlanta - I had to despite my other feelings

• Thé Walking Dead - THE REVEAL!

I don’t have anything else to say other than I know it’s Saturday but you don’t even wanna know what friggin happened!

What I Watched

• Wolf Like Me is — pretty fucking cool. People have issues and others don’t have to be assholes about it. “We’ve all got wolves in us dear, you just have to make sure you feed the right one.”

• The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is back but Amazon is putting out episodes weekly instead of releasing them all at once. There are only a few shows that type of release works for, and this one isn’t that. It’s obvious they are trying to play on nostalgia with the weekly release but yeah, this show doesn’t fit that format. Also the queer Susie plot is FINI HAPPENING !!!

• I used to really like a show called Life and Times of Tim, it has not aged well at all of course but i saw on HBOMax there is a show called Ten Year Old Tom and

• Finally watched the first Downton Abbey movie and it was everything I hoped for now give me more of the Crawleys NOW! Also, Also - do we think there is a possibility some folks from DA could show up in GA? The shows are nearly 20 something years apart in time (I think) but i think it could happen.

What I Read

• I have a lot of books that I’ve been given and bought. Some I read straight away but i also like making my own little library and reading them later - So I finally decided to start with reading “Crying In H Mart” by Michelle Zauner

• This piece on Black Wellness from Glamour, Some of my favs Francheska and Naj are part of it and mention of the soon to come Somewhere Good app which I am so excited for and have been lucky enough to get a sneak peek of.

• They reference this book a lot as something the writers used on The Gilded Age to help create the story of the Black family on the show and now I want it.

• This incredible piece by Reniqua Allen-Lamphere on thé story behind the family in one of Gordon Parks infamous photos. It’s a long read but if you love this photo, which like so many Black folks do, it’s fascinating and sad.

How I Felt

Basically Incredible!!

Not that I didn’t have intrusive thoughts and stuff but like, I tried (am trying) to keep them little and not dwell - and to not be so fucking hateful and mean to myself sometimes about things.

It felt like spring for a day or two, family drama averted, remembered putting yourself first doesn’t always mean you’re selfish, remembered that I’m a good, kind, lovely, talented, badass person…
