How Did I Forget How Good 'Ungodly Hour' Was?

I am no Rob, I know way more about film than music. I have my favorite albums that are always on rotation, I make playlists by seasons instead of feelings (mostly), and will listen to the same song on repeat for weeks at a time.
Yes, I am a Taurus.
Anyway, speaking of fucking FEELINGS, music has been helping me a lot more lately. I feel my way through films but I think music works more like a come-down from emotions. Not necessarily guiding me through them, but like rounding them out in a way. I’ve noticed I settle back into myself wayyyy faster with music than I do with film. Maybe it’s cos whatever I’m supposed to take from it hits faster. and maybe thats ‘cos songs are shorter? You hear a lyric in the middle of a song, it hits you hard, and before you can fully feel it, the song’s over and the next one is already playing.
With film, it’s different. I’ve got at least 109 minutes to not just feel but to figure out my feelings, and then I still sit through the credits trying to make it all make sense together. Music drops you into a moment and moves on unless you press that pause button. Film makes you stay there until you understand why you felt it in the first place.
Stevie Nicks has been on HEAVY rotation in my house and in my headphones. I recently went to NOLA (for the first time) and found an original copy of Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled on vinyl, and I heard Rhiannon in its purest form for the first time and HOLLLLYYYYY FUUCCCCCKKKKK.
And guess what class? I've also made the switch to Apple Music from Spotify. EYE HEAR ABSOLEWTLEE NO DIFFERENCE IN THE SOUND QUALITY BUT I DEW LYKE HOW PRETTY IT IS!
I think the switch is also making me revisit albums that I loved and that brings me to the 2020 album that was on such wildly massive rotation in my lil perfect apartment, Ungodly Hour by Chloe x Halle.
It’s pretty perfect, their vocals are amazing, the lyrics are incredible, the way it flows is immaculate, and like, not to sound like someone who cares about music…. but HOLY SHIT THE TRANSITIONS ARE BBBEEEEAUUTTTIIFFUUUULLL.
I don’t really know how I wanna talk about this album so I figured I’d do a lil track-by-track pull of my favorite lyrics or timecode from each song.

I think it pairs nicely with 2 cups of hot coffee, an afternoon meant for journaling/crafting, followed by an evening that has a bunch of options to go out but zero concrete plans—happy listening.
This is literally a 28-second intro, but close your eyes and listen to their voices, and when it transitions into track 2, come back here and thank me for telling you to close your eyes—I accept thanks in the form of Utz Hot Honey potato chips or 2 round-trip tickets to Amsterdam.

0:22-0:36 like, this song is about revenge and I LOVE REVENGE WHEN IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME. I think that may be something to explore because I don’t think I’ve ever like enacted revenge in my own life. Wait—SHOULD I?
The chorus is perfect because the call is coming from inside the house

the intro to this song is very fun (it’s not my fav song on the album, in fact, it’s my least favorite)
0:22-0:33 HELLLLLPPPPP THE HARMONIESSSSSSSSS another close your eyes song. Also, my favorite moment on the album.

does anyone get vintage Michael Jackson vibes from this one? Also, maybe don’t get into a relationship if you’re still in love with someone from your past—and if you fall in love with someone else during your relationship maybe just leave it…But I am no expert, so WHOMST AMETH EYE.
