There are a few movies that I think most American Black millennials have a shared connection to from our childhoods because of our parents and lazy Saturdays. The Jacksons: An American Dream, The Temptations (which LOL is actually a mini-series but it was always aired back to back so we all just consider it a movie AND I always have to say this fun fact but Eddie Kendricks and my paternal grandfather were cousins!) Soul Food, The Color Purple, and 1993’s What’s Love Got To Do With It.
When we changed the channel to VH1 after flicking through all the others, if this was on it had to be watched. It didn’t matter if it was 15 minutes into it or 45 — the volume went up and the remote was put down.
