This might get cut off in your email so the demand this week is to open in your browser, spread the word about my Substack, and then tell me what movies are already on your holiday list.
Hello!!!
So, I haven’t done one of these in a month because I’ve been busy publishing pieces on films at Newfest and other bits and baubles but—We’re back!
Festival season is over pretty much for me, and now starts another season I’m obsessed with…THE HOLIDAYYYYYSSSS!
It’s time to put trees up, put on cute chilly fits, fly to visit family and friends, and most importantly curl up on your couch or the couch of folks you dig and immerse yourself in holiday movies that make you smile. I’m so excited that I’ve been buying tickets for holiday movies at my local Alamo Theatre that aren’t happening until early December.
I have a pretty expansive library of DVDs (RIP to physical media but also maybe like hello to it again? I don’t know…WHO CAN SAY!?) and I’ve been adding to it by purchasing movies that I’m afraid will completely disappear from any sort of streaming, or will only be available to rent. And as much as I love When Harry Met Sally, I’d rather own it on DVD to watch whenever I want, then rent it for $3.99 every time or buy it for $20 only for them to delete in a few months and give me a credit.
It was at my doorstep in 48 hours and I plan on going to my local record store (that also sells DVDs for about $1-6) to peruse the shelves to add to my holiday film—and everyday film—collection.
This week’s wrap-up is more of a monthly wrap-up to let you know everything I’ve been watching and reading while I was giving y’all reviews and more. I have to say, I was not expecting Fall Of The House of Usher to have such a hold on me, but there I was, watching Carla Gugino bring death upon a family while wearing an array of fantastic outfits and dark eyeshadows.
So, happy holidays! Let’s get cozy!!!!!
My Letterboxd is your new favorite place, but here are some movies about the holidays that I like:
Four Christmases
200 Cigarettes
Wrote about my love of that film on this very Substack!
Boxing Day
Love Actually
Your Christmas or Mine?
The Holiday
Extras:
I saw Saltburn and bitch call me Gwyneth Paltrow ‘cos I am GOOPED.
I had to look up how to spell her name to make that joke.
The header this week is from the film Just Another Girl on the I.R.T
What I Watched
Wilderness
My support of Liv skyrocketed after the conversation at the bar in episode 4—’cos literally fuck you.
The BMF Documentary: Blowing Money Fast
90 Day Fiance: Reunion
Statler is Horrible, Christian is Terrible, and that girl from Little Town, Louisiana is also horrid.
It’s Bruno
NOWHERE
Not to be confused with the 1997 film by Gregg Araki that I have yet to see and its been sitting on my watchlist BECAUSE IT IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR STREAMING OR PURCHASE ANYWHERE.
Hey remember when I was having this same issue with another Araki film, The Doom Generation, and I ended up seeing it at Sundance at a late-night screening where he was present with some of the cast but I just wanted to go after because after years of waiting to see it I ended up hating the movie? Me too.
The top Letterboxd review on this is hilarious.
Somebody Somewhere
Reservation Dogs
Daryl Dixon
This show steadily keeps getting better, it is one of the best spin-offs I have seen in years. It’s wildly well done.
Episode 2, showing how the apocalypse could start on a night out and you don’t realize it—WONDERFULLY DONE.
In episode 3, Isabelle (a name that I’ve always loved) has a super full circle moment that is done IMMACULATLY.
Gen V
This show is fucking incredible. I didn’t think I would vibe with it because I didn’t fully care for/watch The Boys, but it’s totally its own thing.
Having a Black girl lead on this show is perfect, and folks are up in arms about it but fuck them.
This is exactly the superpower I would have. Controlling blood? Sign me up.
This also led me to watch The Boys which…I fuck with!
Mean Mums
There are too many of these style shows and it makes me feel there has to be some sort of truth to how terrible mums are with their children in the world of schooling.
The Fall of The House of Usher
This was IMMACULATE. NO NOTES.
The deaths in this are insane but don’t watch the video if you haven’t watched the series.
What I Re-Watched
Welcome to Flatch
It is not available on DVD so I just bought both seasons on Amazon. I had to. I need it.
Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Aubrey and Anna are fucking hilarious in this
Arrested Development
Gilded Age
Uh-oh! I didn’t like the first episode of the second season!
The Crown
We’re wrapping it up!!! So I have started another rewatch from the top and I’m timing it to next week’s season 6 release.
This will be my second rewatch of the year.

What I Listened To
What I Read
Angelica Ross is an angel to us all and is trying to make Ryan Murphy pay for his crimes. He made it so she couldn’t take a role in the MCU and that means we all lost out on seeing her be part of the Marvel universe and wow.
This piece over on TUDUM explaining every death in the Fall of the House of Usher
The WGA strike is over and here are the terms.
I have started doing some writing for the folks at Pride.com! So far I’ve written about lesbian TikTok drama, how odd it is that white queers are obsessed with straight celebs, and a new WNBA baby!
I wrote a goodbye to Sex Education for Netflix Queue
Office buildings mesmerize me and this piece over on Arch Digest exploring them through the ages is fly.
I too am done with the Blase interview from white women and it pisses me off cos again—yes—Black women are rarely allowed to do this same type of schtick and see success…unless they too align with whiteness.
RUSTIN is an incredible film about an actual forgotten hero, it’s adding to our Queer Black history and I wrote about it for Vogue.
A Photo I Took
I have a Canon T50 Film Camera that I really love & these are some of the images that have come from it <3
Where I Ate
Jarabe - I tried this place because I smelled it after I got my eyebrows done. I canceled my Uber and followed the smell across the street like a cartoon in the 90s.
Auntie Anne’s Pretzels - nuggets or nuthin’
Professor Pizza - this was the best pizza I’ve had in a long time. I got it with the crack thin crust!
My House - I made breakfast at night a lot. and some salads. and then ate citric acid.
Etc.
I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas is my second favorite Christmas song and I don’t care to elaborate.
